A couple of weeks ago a co-worker sent me a little care package containing a five-pack of Joyas de Panama Churchills (thanks, Matt!). It so happened I was playing 9 holes with a couple of buddies the next morning so I excitedly brought one of these out to the golf course for a trial run… I was pleasantly surprised!

This was a very nicely assembled Panamanian puro; an attractive cigar with a relatively simple band. The flavor is mild to medium but very rich, and the burn was cool and even. This smoke starts off rich and creamy with some hay notes and finishes with black coffee and a bit more earth.

This 6.5×53 stick offers a medium brown dry wrapper with tight seams, a smooth firm feel and minimal veins with a slight barnyard aroma. First light reveals very smooth and creamy slightly sweet tobacco, a perfect draw and plenty of rich smoke. The first third ups the smoke production to a medium bodied thick and rich smoke, with very smooth creamy earthy and tabacco flavors with a long smooth finish. 25 min in at the 1/2 way point the only change is the sweetness bringing a slight licorice flavor. The burn is almost razor sharp and the ash is holding a solid 2″ at a time. 45 min in just past the band, the last third holds the same draw flavors adding an earthy finish that gets a bit longer than the start of the stick. Thank you very much to Joyas De Panama for sending this sample for review, I greatly appreciate it!

The burn on the Joyas de Panama is spot on. The other samples were consistently well constructed. Ample smoke is produced throughout, it never heats up, and the burn line remains straight throughout. The ash has a great hold, especially for a Corona.

Building in flavor, the final third, a chocolate flavor pops through, and some barnyard notes linger in the background. A very enjoyable conclusion to the mild smoke.

Joyas de Panama #1 is the first Panamanian cigar reviewed here, and one of the very few Panamanian puros i have smoked. And as such, a pleasant smoke. It is a medium bodied, straight forward cigar, with a mix of spice and cedar as well as some sweet notes.

The delicate wrapper is very interesting in apprearance and seems to be almost transparent in places. Nice feel to the hand and even burn tell about great rolling. The loose draw helps you fill your mouth with lots of smoke with an easy finish.

Goes well on all times of the day. Worth the try for the sake of the Panamanian puro nature.

Escape to the Gorge

This afternoon we crept into the car in need of an escape, and found ourselves headed East. The sky was crystal clear blue. Mt. Hood so striking. Pure white.

It was a very cold and windy day in the Columbia Gorge. The kind of cold that hurts your ears and your face. News reports on the radio cautioned gusts up to 75 mph. White caps on the river were tossing spray that crossed the highway and misted our windshield.

The car's thermometer read 33 degrees outside. Remaining signs of our holiday snow storms still piled beside HWY 84. Waterfalls along the drive also blew mist, leaving icy dried spit across the rocks.

We walked a pedestrian section of the Old Highway before heading up an even older road for a couple of miles. The highway, dated 1850, climbed the bluff where saw two signs of bear. Literally. The first evidence we came across on our walk, and later a government survey marker announced their presence.

House Spirits Distillery’s 3rd Annual Holiday Booze Bazaar

As the holidays quickly approach we find ourselves in need of the warming comforts of local booze, artisan cheese, bacon chocolates and fine cigars. Well, this year we’ve got it all under one roof.

House Spirits Distillery, makers of Aviation Gin, Krogstad Aquavit and Medoyeff Vodka will be hosting it’s 3rd Annual Holiday Booze Bazaar with a gaggle of other great vendors. These vendors will be sampling their wares as well as selling them in our on-premise store.

This event marks the long awaited release of the APOTHECARY line, to be sold exclusively in our on-premise store. The APOTHECARY line will consist of small batch, limited quantity liquors and liqueurs that come in handy 375ml bottles. We have a few items to be released, one being OREGON OUZO, that we’ll be tasting at the event. The Booze Bazaar will also herald the opening of the store on Saturdays from 12/13/08 forward, hours TBA.

Maranon and the cashew

The maranon is a lovely fragrant fruit that grows on trees. It is abundant in Panama. On the end of each fruit is one cashew. Most people I know don't realize that the cashew grows on this fruit.

Two Bridges

Here are photos of the only 2 bridges linking North and South America across the Panama Canal. Bridges of the Americas spans the Pacific entrance to the canal, and was built in 1962. (lower photo)

The Centenario Bridge was built in 2004. It is 9 miles north of the Bridge of the Americas and crosses the Gaillard Cut. (upper photo)

There are a few smaller service bridges that are only available for limited use.

It was a quick trip, but we were able to see a few wild animals, thanks to the jungle that surrounded us.
One day we saw a crew of at least 25 Gato Solos. The young ones were curious, and came very close.

One evening we also met a very nice armadillo. The first I've seen in person. So gentle and cute. What are these anyway? Mammals? Reptiles? He let us walk up just a few feet away from him, as he rooted around in the grass looking for food.

National Flower of Panama

After our visit to the factory on Tuesday, we took a few days off to enjoy the mountains in Cocle.

We stayed at the Posada Cerro la Vieja near the village of Chiguri Arriba. This charming hotel and spa has a few cabins with a gorgeous view in every direction.
The landscape gardener has done quite a job here.

The national flower of Panama is surrounded by the myth that it can only be found inside the mountains of Panama. This specimen, whose scientific name is Peristeria Elata, has a special charm, that takes the form a small white dove with it's wings open at the heart of its petals. It's petals are the color of ivory. The colors are the most intense from the months of July to October when the petals open to display it's natural beauty.

Cerro Azul

We enjoyed the holiday in the mountains. They say in Cerro Azul you can stand and see the Atlantic and the Pacific from the same spot.

We also enjoyed feeding the colorful birds.

Panama Holidays

We landed in Panama at the beginning of a holiday week.
Tomorrow is Independence Day. The following is Flag Day, and Nov 5th is Colon Day, celebrating Christopher Columbus.

Thanks to the 5 day weekend, everyone has left the city, giving us a chance to
practice our latin driving skills.

Were you aware of the fact that 100% Panamiam puros existed on the market? I was not, that’s for sure. Well, after the first French puro, here is another country to add to the list.
Joyas de Panama cigars are constructed of a long filler with Sumatran wrapper. Five vitolas are currently offered: Churchill (178 x 18 mm), Especial #1 (165 x 16 mm - lonsdale), Torpedo (165 x 19 mm), Robusto (130 x 19 mm) and Coronita (130 x 16 mm - corona). The tobacco is grown in the Chiriqui province, a region with rich volcanic soil. I had a chance to try all the sizes and they present common characteristics, this review is a compilation of my notes about different vitolas.

Appearance : ★★★★☆
The wrapper is quite rough with one or two large veins running through. The stick feels right in hand, it is quite heavy and solid. The band is modest and rather stylish.

Construction : ★★★★★
During the first examination, I noticed how tightly the cigars were packed - they would not give in. I was expecting some really tight draw and even thought that my smoke will probably be ruined, but surprisingly the draw, even though it was quite tight in the very beginning, was comfortable. The burn was exceptionally straight and regular. Overall, the construction is top-notch.

Flavor : ★★★★☆
The pre-draw was mostly earthy. Upon lighting (which took slightly more time than I’m used to), I noted earthy and peppery flavors. The smoke was a little dry and full-flavored. What follows is a full rich taste of quality tobacco, with regular vanilla and woody notes. I detected no real evolution until the end.

Value : ★★★★☆
I haven’t found many places online where Joyas de Panama can be purchased, on the official website they are sold at $8 stick which I find a little bit high.

Overall Rating : ★★★★½
To finish with, I can say that I wasn’t expecting something as good - being quite sceptical to the idea of Panamian puros in the beginning. It turned out that these are quality cigars, perfectly enjoyable if you do not require an exceptional flavors complexity and with a fine construction.

The torpedo has been the most popular cigar size at the last few Joyas de Panama cigar events.

Any ideas why? My guess is because of the shape. Like cookies in the
shape of a teddy bear, or gold fish shaped crackers. Everybody loves them,
right?

I really had no idea what to expect with this cigar. The construction issues made me think it might not be too good. I was dead wrong! It was well behaved with lots of smoke & EXCELLENT flavors. The draw was a bit tight, but it was not an issue. The flavors started as a creamy cocca & evolved into an earthy, woodsy flavor. A great combo that made me excited for each puff.
Overall Experience and Rating:
This was an excellent cigar that I WILL smoke again! The beginning flavor of creamy cocoa was just wonderful. I mean really, really good!! I highly enjoyed my time with this cigar & have no trouble giving it an A-. It would have been higher if not for the slight construction issues. I want to give Kevin a big kiss for sending these my way!!!

Cocoa and chocolate, with a little peppery spicy.
Burn:
Good and even burn. At one point, it tunneled a little, but corrected itself, no touch up need.
Drink:
Coffee.
Smoking Notes:
This cigar produced a large cloud of smoke. Easy draw, with a sweet taste coated the palate after each puff. Slow and cool burn. Flavors include nutty and woodsy.
Overall Experience and Rating:
This is a medium strength cigar. It open with a burst of pepper spicy note. Good draw, cool burning with good amount of smoke. B

Light leather with some pepper. Draw is tight. Xikar cut.

It had an even burn with firm white ash. Could not get quite the amount of smoke I wanted until about half way.

This smoke was subtle but showed me several different sides. A light smoke to begin with delivering Leather and Spice. Exhibited some creaminess starting about mid smoke. Slightly sweet finish. It became a medium bodied smoke in the second half.
Overall Experience and Rating:
A smoke from Panama. Well how about that! I have to admit I was not expecting very much from this cigar but I was pleasantly surprised. Looked good, smelled good. The draw was too tight, making me have to be more patient than I wanted. But there was some good flavor in this cigar. I would do it again. In fact, I think i will. B+

Enjoying the View on Sauvie Island, Oregon

This weekend, we at Joyas de Panama enjoyed an afternoon in the Pumpkin Patch on Sauvie Island, Oregon. After visiting the animals, a trip through the corn maze, loading up on fresh produce & caramel apples, we headed into the field.
Giant pumpkins as far as we could see, this was the perfect opportunity to smoke a coronita. We passed on the hay ride.

Last week, we at Joyas de Panama enjoyed a few days on the Oregon coast in the Pacific Northwest. The weather offered signature extremes that make this part of the world dramatic and beautiful. Thank you friends in Manzanita for your hospitality.

The highlight: fresh Dungeness crab and oysters, cooked to order while enjoying the view and the fire.

For dessert? A Robusto.
